Issue 01 — Why I'm starting Modular Notes
Hi, and welcome to Modular Notes.
I'm Wren. I make ambient music in a small spare room that's mostly cables, a desk lamp, and a cat who has decided the patch cables belong to her. For the last couple of years I've been quietly building out a Eurorack rig and recording little pieces whenever the house goes still — usually late, usually with headphones on.
I kept wanting to talk about how the pieces came together: the happy accidents, the modules I can't stop reaching for, the patches I'd lose forever if I didn't write them down. So this is that. A letter, roughly monthly.
Here's what you can expect:
- New tracks as I finish them, with somewhere to listen.
- Patch notes — annotated breakdowns of how a sound was actually built, signal flow and all.
- Gear thoughts, the honest kind. What earns its rack space and what doesn't.
It's all free. If you ever want to chip in, I run a small Patreon — patrons get stems and early demos — but there's zero pressure. Mostly I'm just glad you're here.
More soon. Go patch something.
— Wren
